π Pop Up Prospects - May 2022
I re-ran the model with statistics through 5/3/2022.
Before we get to the list, let's review the goals and objectives of these rankings:
- The rankings presented below are entirely based on performance.
- The rankings are adjusted for age-to-level, proximity to the big leagues, and division factors.
- The goal is not to identify the best prospects, but the best prospect performances so far - we're looking for the Kwans and Pasquantinos, not the Witt Jr's and JRods.
- This list is another tool in your toolbox. Use this list along with prospect rankings and scouting grades.
The optimal use for this model is in-season, recognizing players with stellar performances and aggregated statistics before the mid-year and end-of-year prospect list are released.
Let's review the TOOLs grading system that I'm using.
Pitching categories:
- CTL - ability to strike out batters
- CMD - ability to avoid walking batters, getting batters to chase or swing and miss
- CON - the ability to induce weak contact, get ground balls, reduce line drives
Batting categories:
- BAT - ability to make contact, avoid striking out, and get on base.
- PWR - ability to hit home run, extra base hits, and line drive
- RUN - measure of stolen bases, stolen base success
Both pitching and batting categories are aggregated in to a weighted TOT score. The TOT score for pitchers emphasizes CTL and CMD while the TOT score for batters has heavier weights on BAT and PWR than RUN.
